Musician Allegedly Stabbed Five Times Outside Newcastle Bowling Club
A 69-year-old musician was brutally attacked outside a popular bowling club in Newcastle, with the alleged assailant now facing serious charges in court. Greg Bryce, the frontman of local band DV8, was packing up his musical equipment near the entrance to Merewether Bowling Club on Sunday night when he was allegedly stabbed five times in the chest and back.
CCTV Footage Captures Alleged Attack
Police have reported that CCTV footage shows Yury Skrynnik, 53, attacking Bryce from behind with a knife. The incident occurred just after 7:30 PM on March 22, with Skrynnik allegedly fleeing the scene on foot along Caldwell Street. Bryce managed to return inside the club to seek help, where a doctor on-site provided immediate assistance before paramedics arrived.
Authorities have revealed that Skrynnik's former partner was in a domestic relationship with Bryce at the time, and an apprehended violence order (AVO) was in place. Skrynnik was arrested in Stockton in the early hours of Monday, March 23, and taken to Newcastle Police Station.
Court Proceedings and Charges
Skrynnik has been charged with attempted murder and breaching an AVO, both domestic violence-related offenses. In a bail court hearing on Monday, defence solicitor Donna Smith indicated that Skrynnik would not apply for release. The matter has been adjourned to Newcastle Local Court in May, with a Russian interpreter ordered for future proceedings.
Meanwhile, police are compiling a brief of evidence. Bryce was transported to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition and is expected to undergo surgery. He has been a prominent figure in the Newcastle music scene for over four decades, performing in bands such as Zigzag and Hot Yogis, and writing music for The Screaming Jets.

Grant Walmsley, founding member of The Screaming Jets, described Bryce as "like a big brother" and stated that he is "doing okay" after speaking with his family. Walmsley emphasized Bryce's positive nature, calling him "one of the most beautiful people in the world." The family has requested privacy but expressed gratitude for the outpouring of well-wishes.
Fellow performer Brien McVernon, who has known Bryce since the early 1980s and shares spiritual and musical connections, expressed shock at the incident. "He's such a passive, spiritual guy," McVernon said, highlighting the unexpected nature of the attack.

Club Merewether confirmed the incident occurred outside the venue and is cooperating fully with authorities. In a statement, the club noted that due to the ongoing police investigation, it would be inappropriate to comment further.
