Rat Infestation Grips Westfield Bondi Junction Food Court
Rats Run Wild at Westfield Bondi Junction Food Court

One of Australia’s largest shopping centres is grappling with a rat infestation that has left workers exasperated. Disturbing new footage reveals rodents running rampant in the food court at Westfield Bondi Junction, located in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. The pests have been seen darting through kitchen areas and dining spaces.

Video Evidence of Infestation

The video, obtained by 7NEWS, shows rats moving freely in the food court. A shopper expressed disgust, stating, "That’s disgusting. It’s really horrible." Another shopper indicated that the infestation would deter them from eating there, saying, "Yeah, it would. It definitely would."

Staff Forced to Take Action

Frustrated employees have taken it upon themselves to chase away the rats. Many believe ongoing construction work is contributing to the problem. A $250 million renovation on level six, directly above the food court, is suspected of disturbing the rodents and driving them out of the walls.

Historical Pest Problems

This is not the first time Westfield has faced such issues. In 2022, video emerged of rats running across the food court at Westfield Parramatta. Similarly, in 2019, rodents were spotted at Westfield Sydney in the CBD.

Management Response

Centre management has stated that additional pest control measures and deep cleaning are being implemented to eliminate the rodents. Food outlets and supermarkets have been instructed to manage bin emptying more diligently. In a statement to 7NEWS, Westfield said, "We have regular inspections and targeted measures to eliminate pests at our destination. This is carried out in collaboration with our business partners who are required to undertake their own activity."
