Abbie Chatfield on Doomscrolling, Aliens and a Horrifying Sound Healing
Abbie Chatfield on Doomscrolling, Aliens and Sound Healing

Podcaster and TV host Abbie Chatfield, whose live show Abbie Chatfield Loves Men is touring Australia, has shared her worst dating story, the best advice she ever received, and her thoughts on extraterrestrial life. Speaking to Guardian Australia, Chatfield revealed a chaotic on-stage moment where a woman recounted a shocking sexual encounter involving a wetsuit and a scab.

Nightmare Fuel: The Wetsuit Story

During a segment called Nightmare Fuel on her show in Aotearoa, a woman came on stage to tell her worst dating story. Chatfield recalled: 'Long, long story short: she slept with a guy who was wearing a wetsuit [during sex] – it was just rolled down to below his mid-thigh. And then after they had sex, he took off the wetsuit and had a giant scab on his shin from surfing. He peeled the scab off and ate it in front of her, post-coitus. I lay on the floor of the stage and screamed.'

Advice from Mum

Chatfield shared the best advice she ever received, which came from her mother during a breakup. 'She said, “Oh, I feel so sorry for him.” And I was like, “Why do you feel sorry for him? That doesn’t make any sense, because I’m the one that’s been destroyed by this freak.” And she said, “Because he has to live in his head and you get to live in yours.”' Chatfield said this helped her avoid resentment and not take poor treatment personally.

Procrastination and Sleep Habits

When procrastinating, Chatfield admits to doomscrolling or cutting her cuticles, which she calls 'an anxiety thing.' At night, she often doomscrolls but is trying to return to reading National Geographic magazines. 'There was a tortoise called Jorge I became obsessed with. There was a whole five-page spread on him. It’s all just animals and people doing wonderful things.'

Screen Time and Lying

Chatfield accurately estimated her daily screen time at nine hours and five minutes, noting that much of it is work-related. She also confessed to a recent lie: after a sound healing session that gave her a near panic attack, she told the woman running it that it was 'life-changing' and 'beautiful.' Chatfield said, 'Not her fault, I think I just wasn’t in the right headspace. I guess it was life-changing, in that it was horrifying and made me want to vomit.'

Belief in Aliens

Chatfield believes extraterrestrial life likely exists but does not think it has reached Earth. 'I think that if they’d reached Earth, things would be very bad for us. We’d know.'

The Abbie Chatfield Loves Men national live tour kicks off in Thirroul, New South Wales, on 10 July.
