WA Ballet's Cinderella Dazzles Perth: A 4-Star Fairytale Triumph
Review: WA Ballet's Cinderella Dazzles at His Majesty's

The West Australian Ballet has once again woven its magic, transforming His Majesty's Theatre into a realm of enchantment with its spellbinding production of Cinderella. Choreographed by former principal artist Jayne Smeulders, this classic fairytale has been brought to life for the third time, captivating audiences from its opening night on Saturday, 22 November 2025.

A Seamless and Polished Production

Jayne Smeulders, who first created a full-length ballet for the company in 2011 and again in 2015, demonstrates her mastery in this refined and lively production. Having staged Cinderella internationally, Smeulders presents choreography that flows seamlessly, featuring beautiful lines and dynamic sequences that feel both polished and fresh.

The audience is taken on a visual journey from Cinderella's dismal home to enchanted gardens and the glamourous ball, all thanks to Allan Lees' grand sets and costumes. The transformation is further enhanced by Jon Buswell's evocative lighting, which helps transport the audience into this 1930s-inspired world, based on the Brothers Grimm storyline.

Standout Performances Steal the Show

In the titular role, Mayume Noguromi is the picture of elegance and grace. Her performance is characterised by an incredible sense of effortlessness, with every move executed with a stunning lightness. A particular series of pirouettes was a standout moment, showcasing her technical prowess.

The production's theatricality and humour are brilliantly accentuated by the Stepsisters, played by Pamela Barnes and Asja Petrovski. Green with envy down to their coloured pointe shoes, their exuberant and dramatic antics provide constant amusement, making the roles uniquely their own.

A unique twist in this rendition is the weaving of Cinderella's mother into the story as the Fairy Godmother, delightfully portrayed by Polly Hilton, reprising her role from the 2015 production. She is joined by her posse of Magical Birds: Faith (Charles Dashwood), Hope (Jurgen Rahimi), and Charity (Jesse Homes).

Musical Magic and Unforgettable Moments

The drama of the fairytale is propelled by Sergei Prokofiev's alluring score, performed masterfully by the WA Philharmonic Orchestra under the seasoned baton of Jessica Gethin. The synergy between the orchestra and the opening night cast was palpable.

One of the most magical sequences occurs in the enchanted garden, where the magical birds truly shine. Each dancer performs a solo, showcasing Smeulders' innovative neo-classical flair with dazzling execution. The spectacle continues as a spectacular crystal carriage appears, whisking Cinderella away to the ball.

In Act II, Oscar Valdes gives his all as Prince Charming, performing with strength and enthusiasm as he is captivated by Cinderella while fending off the raucous advances of the Stepsisters.

Despite minor technical difficulties leading to a slightly longer interval, the show went on without a hitch, and nothing could dim the energy of the dedicated dancers.

A Perfect Festive Finale

This production of Cinderella is a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining ballet, full of hope, joy, and escape. It is the perfect combination to carry Perth audiences into the festive season and signal the end of a remarkable year for the WA Ballet—a year marked by new beginnings, fine artistry, and unfaltering passion.

Rated 4 Stars, WA Ballet's Cinderella continues its run at His Majesty's Theatre in Perth until December 14. Don't miss this opportunity to be swept away by a truly magical production.
