Police have revealed that missing Degarra man Ray Dark would not have survived more than minutes in the raging floodwaters of Cyclone Jasper. The 65-year-old was last seen at his property on Sunday afternoon as the cyclone bore down on the region.
Search efforts hampered by dangerous conditions
Emergency services have been unable to launch a full-scale search due to the extreme weather conditions. Floodwaters have made roads impassable, and the area remains in lockdown. Police Acting Superintendent Mark Henderson said the chances of finding Mr. Dark alive are extremely slim.
“Given the ferocity of the floodwaters, it is highly unlikely that anyone caught in them would survive for long,” he said. “Our thoughts are with Mr. Dark’s family during this difficult time.”
Community rallies despite tragedy
The local community has expressed deep sorrow over the incident. Neighbors described Mr. Dark as a kind and private man who loved the land. One resident, who asked not to be named, said: “Ray was a good bloke. He kept to himself but was always willing to lend a hand. This is just devastating.”
Cyclone Jasper has caused widespread destruction across far north Queensland, with record rainfall and flooding. Many residents have been evacuated, and emergency crews are on high alert.
Police are urging anyone with information about Mr. Dark’s whereabouts to come forward. The search will resume once conditions improve.
