Corrimal Library and Community Centre will close its doors next month for essential upgrades, but book lovers need not worry as the facility is scheduled to reopen in September.
Closure Dates and Scope of Works
The library's last day of operation will be May 8, with the community centre in the same building following suit a few days later. The closure will allow Wollongong City Council to replace the ageing heating, ventilation and air conditioning system, lay new flooring in the hall, and improve lighting within the library.
Council's Director of Infrastructure and Works, Joanne Page, explained that the decision to carry out multiple projects simultaneously was made to minimise the overall closure period. By coordinating the works, the council aims to reduce disruption to the community while ensuring the facility receives much-needed upgrades.
Support for Regular Users
Staff at Corrimal have been proactively assisting regular user groups in finding alternative venues during the closure. Library customers will need to visit the nearest branches at Wollongong and Thirroul, and are advised to change their preferred pick-up location for reservations to one of these sites. The council encourages patrons to plan ahead to ensure a smooth transition during the renovation period.
The project is part of ongoing efforts to maintain and improve community infrastructure across the Illawarra region. The library and community centre have served as a vital hub for local residents, and the upgrades are expected to enhance the experience for all users when the doors reopen in spring.
