The incident occurred around 4:30 am. Despite the best efforts of first responders and medical teams who rushed to the scene, Mr. Nicol sustained critical injuries and could not be saved. He was declared deceased at the location. Shortly after the tragedy, a vehicle believed to be involved, a silver Hyundai iX35 hatchback, was located at a residence in the nearby suburb of Urraween.
Authorities have alleged that the driver failed to remain at the scene and did not render any assistance. A 20-year-old Urraween man has since been charged with multiple offences, including dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death, failing to remain at the scene and render assistance, and additional drugs and weapons charges.
The accused faced the Gympie Magistrates Court on Saturday and was remanded in custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for January 1 next year at the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court. Police are appealing to the public for any footage of the silver Hyundai in the Pialba and Point Vernon areas between 3:00 am and 4:30 am on the day of the incident.
