Community Spirit Roars to Life in Illawarra Convoy

The rumble of engines will echo through the Illawarra region this weekend as the beloved annual Convoy returns, with Ross Transport securing the lead position after an emotional live auction that saw them pledge $305,000 for the honor.

This marks the first time since 2010 that Ross Transport will lead the procession of trucks and motorcycles down Mount Ousley, creating a spectacular sight for thousands of expected spectators along the route.

Emotional Victory for Amarli's Army

Truce Ross-Sawrey of Ross Transport described the auction experience as both exciting and overwhelming. "We were very excited, you never know where you're going to end up, it's literally a live auction," she shared. "We've been fundraising all year, so we were hoping to lead for Amarli."

The moment of victory came when Jade Broome, mother of Amarli, placed the final bid. "We said, 'Oh my God, we've won,' and we're just very excited," Ross-Sawrey recalled. "Jade put the final bid in and she was just ecstatic, she was shaking."

For Jade Broome, the achievement represented a triumphant moment after a challenging year. "I don't even know if it did sink in, it's a moment we'll never forget," she said. "My hand was shaking when I was saying that final number."

Community Support Provides Lifeline

The Illawarra Convoy Foundation has become a crucial support system for families dealing with serious medical conditions, providing practical assistance including food and fuel vouchers, medical equipment, and other essential support.

Ms Broome emphasized how significant this help has been for their family, describing the Convoy's support as a "lifeline" during difficult times. "It's been a lot of heartache and sad times but I think Sunday's just going to all be about joy and excitement and watching the community come together," she said.

The Ross Transport bid received substantial support from the community, with Amarli's Army raising over $45,000 throughout the year and maintaining their position as the number one fundraising team. An additional $78,000 contribution from Grechys Boxing and Fitness significantly boosted their final auction amount.

Two Decades of Community Generosity

The Illawarra Convoy has established an impressive legacy since its inception 21 years ago, having raised more than $27 million to support local families in need.

Ms Broome expressed deep gratitude for the Illawarra community's ongoing support. "We feel extremely blessed to live where we do," she said. "The Illawarra is certainly the best place."

One community member perfectly captured the event's significance, describing it as "better than Christmas" for the region.
