The incident occurred on Monday morning when two vehicles collided head-on on the Bruce Highway at Aloomba, approximately 20 kilometres south of Cairns. Emergency services were called to the scene around 9:30 am. One driver, believed to be a man in his 40s, was trapped in his vehicle and had to be freed by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services crews. Highway Closure and Traffic Delays
The Bruce Highway was closed in both directions between the Gordonvale and Aloomba exits as emergency services worked at the scene. The highway was reopened later in the afternoon after the wreckage was cleared and investigations were completed.
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward and assist with the investigation.
Community Response
The crash has sent shockwaves through the local community, with many expressing their concern for the injured drivers on social media. Local authorities have reminded all motorists to drive with caution, especially on highways where speeds are higher and the risk of serious injury is greater.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety. The Bruce Highway is a vital transport link for the region, and such closures can have a significant impact on local businesses and commuters.
