A leading urban planning expert from Christchurch has urged the Australian Capital Territory government to consider building a new stadium in Canberra's central business district, arguing it would deliver significant economic and social benefits.

Dr. Michael Smith, a specialist in urban regeneration who advised on Christchurch's post-earthquake rebuild, said Canberra should follow the example of cities like Christchurch, which built a new stadium in its city centre after the 2011 earthquake. He noted that the project revitalised the local economy and created a vibrant community hub.
"A central location for a stadium can transform a city," Dr. Smith said. "It draws people into the city centre, supports local businesses, and becomes a focal point for community events."
Economic and Social Benefits
The expert highlighted that a CBD stadium would generate increased foot traffic for nearby restaurants, bars, and shops, boosting the local economy. He also pointed to improved public transport access and reduced travel times for spectators. "Canberra has the opportunity to create a world-class venue that complements its existing cultural and sporting facilities," he added.
Dr. Smith's comments come as the ACT government considers upgrades to existing venues, including Canberra Stadium in Bruce. Chief Minister Andrew Barr has previously expressed interest in a new stadium but has not committed to a specific location.
