Tragic Loss in South Australia's Floodwaters

A motorcyclist has tragically lost his life in rising floodwaters while participating in a memorial ride for his father, who died in a crash in the same area nearly two years ago. The incident occurred in South Australia's southern Flinders Ranges, highlighting the severe weather conditions gripping the region.

Details of the Fatal Incident

Darran "Daggs" Hyman, a 47-year-old from Kadina on the Yorke Peninsula, was swept away on Sunday. According to friends who spoke to 7NEWS, Hyman was attempting to rescue his motorbike from Fogden Creek when he lost his footing and fell into the fast-flowing water. He was riding with friends on RM Williams Way between Orroroo and Carrieton near Eurelia, approximately 300 kilometres north of Adelaide, when the tragedy unfolded.

The area had been subjected to days of heavy rainfall, with more than 100 millimetres recorded across parts of the Mid North and outback. This deluge created extremely dangerous conditions, contributing to the fatal accident.

A Heartbreaking Memorial Ride

The ride was organised in honour of Hyman's father, Trevor Hyman, who himself died in a motorbike crash in the Flinders Ranges almost exactly two years prior. This poignant connection adds a layer of sorrow to the event, as the family now mourns two losses linked to the same location.

Hyman, a well-known musician, mechanic, and father of six, was remembered fondly by loved ones. His sister, Kylie Foley, shared a heartfelt tribute online, expressing her grief. "Gone too soon but never forgotten. Throttle wide open, ride free forever," she wrote. "We already lost Dad, and through all the pain we had each other. The space is now empty where you left — it's dark and cold."

Community Reaction and Warnings

Friend Chris Paget described being "stunned" by the news, stating, "Of all the things that could happen in this world, I didn't want or need to hear this." He added, "You went doing something you loved, for someone so important to you. My heartfelt thoughts are with Leanne and all your family, friends and muso mates. Reunited with your Dad… rest in peace, mate."

Emergency services have emphasised that conditions in the area remain extremely hazardous, with multiple roads cut off and floodwaters continuing to rise rapidly. Authorities are strongly urging motorists to avoid driving through floodwaters as the weather situation remains unstable and unpredictable.

Record Rainfall in the Region

The Mid North experienced some of the heaviest rainfall in the state on Sunday, with notable totals including:

  • 149 millimetres at Braemar
  • 129 millimetres at Yunta Airstrip
  • 122 millimetres at McCoys Well
  • 120 millimetres at Panaramitee

This significant precipitation has exacerbated flooding risks, making travel in the region particularly perilous. The community is now grappling with the loss of a beloved figure while facing ongoing environmental challenges.
