A Nowra woman has been prohibited from owning animals for the next ten years after admitting to 45 counts of animal cruelty. Janine Marion, 51, appeared before Nowra Local Court on Tuesday, where she pleaded guilty to a series of offences involving the neglect of horses and dogs under her care.
Details of the Offences
The charges stem from inspections conducted by RSPCA NSW inspectors between 2020 and 2022. Authorities discovered multiple animals living in squalid conditions on Marion's property. Among the animals affected were horses suffering from severe hoof overgrowth, dental issues, and inadequate nutrition. Several dogs were found with untreated medical conditions, including skin infections and matted fur.
Court Proceedings
Magistrate Gabriel Fleming imposed a 10-year ban on owning, caring for, or living with animals. Additionally, Marion was sentenced to a community corrections order for 18 months, requiring her to undertake supervision and treatment. She was also ordered to pay $5,000 in costs to the RSPCA.
In her sentencing remarks, Magistrate Fleming highlighted the prolonged suffering endured by the animals, describing the neglect as "deliberate and sustained." She noted that Marion had previously been warned about the condition of her animals but failed to take corrective action.
RSPCA Response
RSPCA NSW chief inspector Scott Meyers welcomed the sentence, stating it sends a strong message that animal cruelty will not be tolerated. "This was a case of serious neglect over an extended period. The ban ensures that no more animals will suffer under this individual's care," he said.
The RSPCA also urged the public to report any suspected animal cruelty promptly. "Early intervention can prevent suffering and save lives," Meyers added.
Background
Marion's case is one of several recent animal cruelty prosecutions in the Illawarra region. Authorities have noted an increase in reports of neglect, particularly involving horses and livestock. The RSPCA continues to conduct routine inspections and respond to complaints from concerned citizens.
The 10-year ban is one of the longest imposed in the area for animal cruelty offences. Marion was also ordered to surrender all animals in her possession immediately. The RSPCA will conduct follow-up visits to ensure compliance with the ban.
