Authorities in Canberra are searching for a man alleged to have deliberately damaged a significant marble sculpture within the hallowed grounds of the Australian War Memorial.
Appeal for Public Assistance
ACT Policing has released a photograph of a man they believe vandalised one of the stone 'droplets' in the 'For Every Drop Shed in Anguish' installation. The incident is reported to have occurred around 12:20 pm on Thursday, October 23. Investigators allege the artwork was targeted with a sharp instrument, causing damage to the marble piece.
Police have described the person in the image as Caucasian in appearance, with a large build and shoulder-length brown hair. He was reportedly wearing a blue T-shirt and long brown pants at the time of the alleged offence.
The Significance of the Damaged Artwork
The vandalised element is part of a larger work by renowned sculptor Alex Seton, which was officially unveiled in February 2024. The sculpture consists of 18 individual stone droplets, some weighing as much as 3000 kilograms. Located in the memorial's sculpture garden, it serves as a profound place for reflection.
Unlike traditional statues depicting soldiers in combat, 'For Every Drop Shed in Anguish' was conceived to represent the blood, sweat, and tears shed by all those affected by war, including service families. Dr Althea Gunn, a senior art curator at the memorial, previously stated that the artwork captures the deep complexities of suffering, offering a different way to recognise the true cost of military service.
A Pattern of Vandalism
This incident marks the first reported act of vandalism at the Australian War Memorial this year, following at least four separate reports in 2024. Between March and August last year, the exterior walls and other memorials, including the Vietnam War Memorial, were defaced by protesters.
ACT Policing is now urging anyone with information about the identity of the man in the released photograph to come forward to assist their ongoing investigation.
