Kathmandu's Feather Flight Luggage Range Expands with Innovative Lightweight Designs
A recent family holiday to Noosa provided the perfect opportunity to test Kathmandu's newly extended Feather Flight luggage range, which has garnered attention for its lightweight and durable features. The range, originally launched as one of the world's lightest two-wheeled carry-ons, now includes four styles: two check-in and two carry-on options, available in both spinner (four-wheel) and roller (two-wheel) designs.
First Impressions and Key Features
During the trip, the Feather Flight Check In Spinner (80L; $499.98) was put to the test. This model, in a Bright Navy colourway, impressed with its extremely lightweight construction, spacious interior, and elegant design. The suitcase is packed with high-tech specifications, including the new exLIGHT exoskeleton on the front and back. This innovation allows for a larger, more impact-resistant case that remains easily manoeuvrable.
The range utilises ultra-durable fibre commonly found in personal armour and climbing gear, along with a patent-pending exLIGHT lattice design that offers outstanding strength-to-weight performance. Additional features include an ergonomic handle, four spinning wheels for smooth movement, and a built-in TSA-accepted travel-sentry-approved lock for added security.
Constructed from 93 per cent recycled ripstop nylon and seven per cent UHMWPE, the Feather Flight case boasts exceptional tear resistance. This not only enhances durability during rough handling by baggage staff but also contributes to a distinctive appearance that makes it easy to spot on baggage carousels.
Performance and User Experience
Over a 10-day holiday, the suitcase proved more than capable of holding luggage for two young children, aged four and one. The various compartments and ease of wheeling around, even when carrying additional items in a rush, were standout features. The bag's performance and style align with the original Feather Flight carry-on, which has won multiple awards in the past.
According to Kathmandu Senior Equipment Designer Adam Gorrie, the expansion of the Feather Flight range addresses evolving airline rules and traveller needs. "Airline rules are changing quickly, and luggage needs to change with it, so we're designing gear that helps travellers adapt," Gorrie explained. "The exLIGHT exoskeleton strikes a perfect balance between form and function, providing strength and protection while creating a distinctive visual language."
Endorsements and Versatility
The new range has also been tested by comedy duo and Kathmandu Ambassadors The Inspired Unemployed, Jack Steele and Matt Ford. Jack, who tested the 40L spinner, highlighted the organisation and ease of movement as key benefits. "Traveling frequently means I'm always trying to move fast through airports, and this bag makes that way easier," he said. "The compartments help me stay organised, and I love how lightweight it is for longer trips."
Matt, who tested the 80/90L check-in spinner, found the design ideal for longer trips where organisation and capacity are essential. "It's super spacious but still lightweight, which makes packing extra shoes and clothes easy," he noted.
Final Verdict
Overall, the Kathmandu Feather Flight range is highly recommended for travellers seeking their next suitcase purchase. With options for two or four wheels and various sizes, there is something to suit every traveller's preferences. The combination of lightweight design, durability, and innovative features makes it a standout choice in the competitive luggage market.
