Australian Women's Weekly columnist Julie Goodwin made a special appearance on Sunrise on Tuesday to demonstrate her delicious and easy one-pan char siu chicken recipe. This dish combines grilled chicken, hokkien noodles, and a sweet, savoury sauce, making it an ideal choice for a perfect family dinner that ticks all the right boxes.
Ingredients for the One-Pan Char Siu Chicken
This recipe serves four people and has a total preparation and cooking time of approximately 40 minutes. The ingredients include:
- 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
- 6 bone-in, skin-on chicken thigh cutlets, with excess fat trimmed
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 240g jar of char siu sauce
- ¼ cup (60ml) light soy sauce
- ¼ cup (60ml) rice wine vinegar or white vinegar
- 3 cloves garlic, chopped
- 3cm piece ginger, finely julienned
- 400g packet of wok-ready hokkien noodles
- 1 bunch Chinese broccoli, trimmed and cut into thirds lengthways
- 4 green onions, cut into 4cm lengths
Step-by-Step Cooking Method
To prepare this one-pan char siu chicken, follow these detailed instructions:
- In a large high-sided frying pan over medium-high heat, place the sesame seeds and toast them until they turn golden. Remove the toasted seeds to a bowl and wipe out the pan.
- Pat the chicken pieces dry with paper towel. Add the vegetable oil to the same pan over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, place the chicken skin-side down and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until the skin achieves a deep golden brown colour. Turn the chicken and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
- In a medium bowl, combine the char siu sauce, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, garlic, and ginger. Pour this sauce mixture into the pan with the chicken. Cook uncovered over medium heat, occasionally spooning the sauce over the chicken, for about 15 minutes or until the chicken is fully cooked through. If the sauce begins to thicken and reduce too much before the chicken is done, add a little water to the pan to prevent burning.
- Meanwhile, place the hokkien noodles and the hard stem parts of the Chinese broccoli into a large heatproof bowl. Cover them with boiling water from a kettle. After approximately one minute, add the rest of the broccoli leaves and the green onions to the water to blanch. After one more minute, strain the noodles and vegetables and nestle them around the chicken in the pan.
- To serve, sprinkle the toasted sesame seeds over the dish for added flavour and texture.
This one-pan char siu chicken recipe is not only quick and easy but also packed with flavour, making it a fantastic option for busy weeknights or casual family gatherings. Julie Goodwin's expertise ensures that even novice cooks can achieve delicious results with minimal effort.
