Urgent Ham Recall Issued Across NSW and Victoria Over Listeria Contamination

An urgent recall notice has been issued for a popular ham sold in New South Wales and Victoria, following the discovery of listeria monocytogenes contamination. Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) issued the alert on Tuesday, specifically targeting Barkly Smokehouse's 1.9kg Lux Ham with a use-by date of May 6.

Contaminated Product Details and Retail Locations

The affected hams have been found to be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause listeria infection. According to FSANZ, the product has been sold at independent retailers, including IGA stores. Consumers are strongly advised not to consume this ham and to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. FSANZ emphasizes that anyone concerned about their health should seek immediate medical advice.

Health Risks and Symptoms of Listeria Infection

Listeria infection poses significant health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups. FSANZ warns that it may cause severe illness in pregnant women, unborn babies, neonates, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. However, the general population can also become ill from consuming contaminated food. Symptoms typically include diarrhea, upset stomach, and vomiting, which often resolve within a few days, as noted by the Mayo Clinic.

In more severe cases, listeria bacteria can spread beyond the stomach to the brain and spinal cord, leading to symptoms such as fever, chills, muscle aches, fatigue, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and seizures. The Mayo Clinic indicates that these symptoms usually start within two weeks of eating tainted food but can take up to two months to appear. Individuals experiencing fever, muscle aches, upset stomach, or loose stools are urged to contact a healthcare professional promptly.

Recall Response and Ongoing Investigation

The recall involves a specific batch of Barkly Smokehouse's 1.9kg Lux Ham, which has been confirmed as contaminated with listeria. FSANZ is coordinating the recall effort to ensure public safety. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, and consumers are encouraged to check their purchases for the affected product. As of now, there has been no official comment from Barkly Smokehouse regarding the recall, but further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
