Man Charged with Domestic Violence Murder After Woman Found Dead on Mareeba Verandah
A 34-year-old man has been formally charged with domestic violence related murder following the tragic discovery of a 54-year-old woman deceased on a verandah in Queensland's Far North region. Police were alerted to the distressing scene after receiving a call from the woman's son early Wednesday morning, prompting an immediate response to a Downs Street property in Mareeba, located approximately one hour west of Cairns.
Altercation and Attempted Concealment Alleged
Detective Inspector Kevin Goan provided chilling details, stating that investigators will allege a violent altercation occurred at the residence during the previous evening. "We will allege that at some point throughout the evening, an altercation took place at the property, and the lady sustained life-threatening injuries which she succumbed to," Goan explained to gathered media representatives. The woman was found with significant injuries to her upper body and head, according to official police statements.
Authorities have further alleged there was a deliberate attempt to conceal the death, though specific details remain confidential during the ongoing investigation. "It's not something that I can go into at this time other than to suggest that there was an attempt to conceal the fact that the lady had succumbed to injuries inflicted," Goan revealed, highlighting the disturbing nature of the case.
Crime Scene Established and Charges Laid
Police immediately declared a formal crime scene at the Mareeba property as forensic examinations and investigative procedures commenced. The 34-year-old man, who was known to the deceased woman and described as having an "intrafamilial" relationship with her, was taken into custody at the scene without incident.
The accused now faces multiple serious charges including:
- One count of murder as a domestic violence offence
- Misconduct of a corpse
- Contravening a domestic violence order
Detective Inspector Goan emphasized that the 34-year-old represents the sole person of interest in this investigation, stating "I raise that to give community confidence that there is no one else that we're looking at in connection with this death." Police have confirmed no other individuals were present during the alleged incident.
Community Appeal and Legal Proceedings
Investigators are now urgently appealing to the local community for assistance, particularly seeking information from anyone who was in the Downs Street vicinity during the relevant time period. "We are urging anyone that was in the Downs Street vicinity... who may have any information or relevant vision to come forward and speak with police," Goan stressed, highlighting the importance of community cooperation in resolving this tragic case.
Support services have been mobilized to assist the woman's grieving family during what police describe as a "very difficult time" for her loved ones. The accused man has been formally refused police bail and is scheduled to make his initial court appearance at the Mareeba Magistrates Court on April 17, where legal proceedings will commence regarding these serious domestic violence allegations.
