Sam Kerr Joins Gotham FC in Record-Breaking NWSL Return
Sam Kerr Confirms NWSL Return with Gotham FC Move

Sam Kerr, the National Women's Soccer League's all-time leading scorer, has confirmed her return to the competition by signing with NJ/NY Gotham FC. The Australian striker, who has spent the past seven years at Chelsea, will join the New Jersey-based club ahead of the 2026 season.

Kerr, 32, holds the NWSL record with 77 goals, a tally she amassed during her time with the Western New York Flash, Sky Blue FC (now Gotham), and Chicago Red Stars. Her move back to the United States marks a significant moment for both the player and the league, as she brings a wealth of experience and a proven goal-scoring pedigree.

Kerr's Legacy and Impact

Kerr's NWSL career began in 2013 with the Western New York Flash, where she scored 8 goals in 17 appearances. She later moved to Sky Blue FC, notching 28 goals in 37 games, before a stint with the Chicago Red Stars that yielded 41 goals in 43 matches. Her 77 goals place her atop the league's all-time scoring chart, a record she has held since 2019.

"I'm thrilled to be coming back to the NWSL and to Gotham FC," Kerr said in a statement. "This league has always been special to me, and I can't wait to help this team compete for championships." The club's general manager, Yael Averbuch West, added: "Sam is a generational talent. Her addition instantly makes us more dangerous in the final third and brings a championship mindset."

Gotham's Ambitions

Gotham FC, which finished third in the 2025 regular season, has been building a formidable squad. The signing of Kerr, who has scored over 100 goals in all competitions for Chelsea and led the Blues to multiple Women's Super League titles, signals the club's intent to challenge for the NWSL Championship. Kerr's arrival also reunites her with former Chicago teammate, midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo.

The deal is reported to be a multi-year contract, though financial terms were not disclosed. Kerr will join Gotham after completing her commitments with Chelsea, where she has been recovering from a knee injury sustained in early 2025.

A Boost for the NWSL

Kerr's return is a major boost for the NWSL, which has seen increased investment and attendance in recent years. The league's average attendance rose by 12% in 2025, and broadcast partnerships with CBS and Amazon have expanded its reach. Kerr's global profile—she is one of the most recognizable women's footballers—is expected to draw further attention to the league.

"The NWSL continues to attract the best players in the world," said NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman. "Sam's decision to come back is a testament to the growth and competitiveness of our league."

Kerr will be eligible to play for Gotham starting with the 2026 NWSL season, which begins in March. The club's first match of the season is scheduled against the San Diego Wave on March 21.
