Family Devastated After Woman's Death Following Alleged Assault by Partner
A family is reeling from the tragic loss of a "kind, strong" woman who died after an alleged assault by her partner, with police investigating a suspicious death after the man reported a kangaroo crash. Christine Marshall Hunter, 27, was found deceased with visible facial injuries on the Barkly Highway near Barkly Homestead in the Northern Territory around 8am on Sunday.
Police Investigation Reveals Contradictory Claims
Northern Territory Acting Commander Mark Grieve stated that a 33-year-old man called Triple-0 at approximately 5.47am, reporting his partner had stopped breathing and required urgent medical assistance. The man further claimed they had struck a kangaroo while driving west along the highway earlier that morning, implying her injuries resulted from that collision.
However, investigators allege Hunter was assaulted hours before this report. Police believe the pair were in a dark-coloured Jeep Cherokee parked near the intersection of the Barkly and Tablelands highways between 1.30am and 5.30am, with the alleged assault occurring around 1.30am. When officers arrived at the scene, Hunter had already passed away.
The man has since been arrested, and authorities are treating her death as highly suspicious. Grieve noted that investigators found no evidence of a kangaroo strike and are examining whether damage to the Jeep is recent or pre-existing.
Family's Heartbreaking Tribute
Hunter's sister, Jazmyne Le Cerf, shared with media that the Sunshine Coast family has been profoundly impacted by her sudden death, describing Hunter as "deeply loved." Le Cerf expressed, "She had a beautiful soul, and she was kind, strong, and full of love. She meant so much to all of us and losing her has completely broken our hearts."
Le Cerf emphasized that Hunter did not deserve what happened and should be remembered for her vibrant life and the light she brought to others, not just the circumstances of her passing. The sisters had a close bond, and Le Cerf revealed the couple had only begun their relationship in January.
In response to the tragedy, Le Cerf launched a GoFundMe campaign to bring her sister home to Queensland for a proper farewell. She wrote, "She came from a big, loving family of eight siblings, and losing her has left a space in our lives that can never be filled." The family has expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support during this difficult time.
Police Appeal for Information
Authorities have released an image of the dark-coloured Jeep Cherokee and are urging anyone who may have seen the vehicle or its occupants to come forward. It is believed the pair travelled from Gympie in Queensland starting April 1, passing through locations such as Ban Ban Springs, Emerald, Winton, Cloncurry, Mt Isa, and Camooweal in Queensland.
Police continue to investigate the exact sequence of events leading to Hunter's death, with the community and her family seeking answers and justice in this heartbreaking case.
