Aravina Estate Celebrates 40 Years with Major Expansion and Innovation

For a winery, elements like restaurants, accommodation, and function facilities are not just examples of diversification; they are integral to the hospitality experience. While viniculture and winemaking remain core business, they form a subset of a broader hospitality vision. In line with this, Aravina Estate in Yallingup is marking its 40th anniversary year by significantly enhancing its offerings with the addition of 21 new cabins on Wildwood Ridge. This expansion far exceeds the accommodation capacity of many other wineries in the renowned Margaret River region, positioning Aravina as a leader in integrated hospitality.

A Tour of the Picturesque Estate

Recently, I had the opportunity to explore the picturesque 73-hectare estate with general manager Helen Munro-Tobin, who guided me in a small buggy. The weather was perfect as we drove past the sparkling waters of the main dam, which resembles a lake, observing ducks frolicking on the grassy expanse near the taphouse. On the other side, a small apple and pear orchard added to the scenic beauty. Beyond lay extensive vineyards dedicated to 12 grape varieties, including semillon, chenin blanc, shiraz, tempranillo, and grenache, showcasing the estate's commitment to diverse viticulture.

State-of-the-Art Winemaking Facility

Our first stop was the winemaking facility, built in 2018 to incorporate the latest technology. "This is where it all happens," Helen remarked as we entered. "We've just started vintage, and they're doing some crushing today." The pungent smell of fermentation immediately filled the air, a scent Helen admitted not everyone enjoys but she personally loves. Chief winemaker Ryan Aggiss joined us briefly, noting the intense pace of harvest: "Three weeks and we'll be done. It's such a perishable product; once it's in the bins, the clock's ticking. It's challenging, but we're all still here with our toes and fingers intact." His humor highlighted the demanding nature of winemaking.

Ryan offered samples of fresh juices, including a rosé base made from cabernet, merlot, and chardonnay, which he described as "a bit left-of-centre for a rosé base." He explained that this juice, separated from the pulp, is rich in folate and beneficial for health. Earlier, I had enjoyed the finished product during a wine tasting with staff member Piergiorgio, further emphasizing the quality of Aravina's offerings.

Brewery and Additional Amenities

Next, we visited John Arnold at the brewery, part of Aravina's 8 Waves Brewing Co. Having sampled a selection of beers over a pizza lunch at the restaurant, it was no surprise when Ryan mentioned that visitors are as eager to drink beer as wine here. John shared his journey from home brewer to professional, stating, "I've been here five years now, and the beer's just getting better and better. It's good fun, and I enjoy it." He noted that demand might require additional tanks, a positive sign of growth.

Continuing the tour, we stopped at the orchard, where I gathered ripe apples and pears in my hat for later. In the distance, the lush wedding garden with its maze of boardwalk, which I had explored earlier, added to the estate's charm. Helen also showed me the Botero sculpture at the cellar door entrance, the kitchen garden with fresh herbs and vegetables, impressive function rooms, and the WA Surf Gallery, each contributing to Aravina's multifaceted appeal.

Conclusion

Aravina Estate's 40th anniversary is not just a milestone but a testament to its evolution into a comprehensive hospitality destination. With new cabins, advanced winemaking technology, and diverse amenities, it continues to set benchmarks in the Margaret River region. As Helen Munro-Tobin and the team lead the way, Aravina remains a vibrant hub for wine, beer, and unforgettable experiences.
