Headspace Mandurah Calls on Community to Join 2026 Push-Up Challenge for Youth Mental Health Awareness
The team at Headspace Mandurah is rallying local residents to get active and "push-it" by participating in the 2026 Push-Up Challenge, a major initiative aimed at raising awareness and funds for mental health support for young people in the area.
Honoring Lives Lost Through Physical Challenge
This year's Push-Up Challenge, scheduled to run from June 3 to 26, requires participants to complete 3307 push-ups over 24 days. This number symbolically represents the 3307 Australian lives lost to suicide in 2024, creating a powerful tribute through physical activity.
Headspace Mandurah, which directly assisted 537 young people in 2025 and expects to surpass that figure in 2026, relies heavily on funds raised through this event to expand its critical services.
Impact of Fundraising on Local Youth Services
Sherenne Foale, centre manager at Headspace Mandurah, emphasized how the challenge has transformed their ability to support vulnerable youth. "The funds raised enable us to implement initiatives we couldn't otherwise afford," she explained. "For instance, we're launching our first-ever school holiday program this year, something previously impossible due to budget constraints."
Foale highlighted successful partnerships with local schools, noting that Mandurah Catholic College's participation over the past two years has fostered open conversations about mental health, making young people more comfortable seeking help.
"That relationship has resulted in a lot more young people seeking help and feeling more comfortable, because it's started conversations around mental health and raising awareness," Foale said.
Expanding Reach Through School Collaborations
Thanks to Push-Up Challenge funds, Headspace Mandurah has extended its outreach to Coodanup College, particularly supporting young women. "The schools are now impacting other schools," Foale observed, describing a ripple effect that builds trust within vulnerable communities, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth.
"Such a small amount of money has such a big impact... and it's not just them, it's their friends, it's their family, it's their other siblings. If they've had a good experience, they're telling others... It's the ripples, and it's so important and so significant," she added.
Australia's Largest Mental Health Fitness Event
Nicole Cikarela, chief executive of The Push-Up Challenge, described it as Australia's premier mental health fitness event, with over 230,000 participants in 2025. "It's absolutely free to join, and fundraising is actually optional," she noted, emphasizing the event's accessibility.
Cikarela explained the holistic benefits: "It's a lot of fun, and it's actually really good for you. It's the combination of physical activity, connection and conversations and learning about mental health, and that combination is really powerful at an individual level, but also at a community level."
Flexible Participation and Charitable Partnerships
The Push-Up Challenge is a free event where participants can choose to fundraise for beneficiary partners like Lifeline or Headspace, or for The Push for Better Foundation, the charity organizing the event. Nick Hudson, the Perth-based founder, stressed the collaborative approach: "The Push-Up Challenge prides itself on bringing together three of Australia's major mental health charities with one common goal."
Hudson outlined the complementary roles: "With The Push For Better Foundation's focus on mental health education, Lifeline's 24-hour crisis support and suicide prevention services, and Headspace's early intervention services for young people, we'll work together to engage Australians in a holistic conversation about mental health."
Inclusive Options for All Fitness Levels
For those unable to complete 3307 push-ups, the challenge offers flexibility. Participants can set alternative goals or track different exercises like sit-ups or squats through a dedicated app, ensuring inclusivity regardless of fitness ability.
The 2025 event saw remarkable success, with participants completing over 328 million push-ups and raising more than $12.4 million. Registration for the 2026 challenge is open to individuals, teams, workplaces, clubs, gyms, and schools, fostering broad community engagement in this vital cause.
