Family Honors Annalyse on 18th Birthday After Tragic Dog Attack
The family of Annalyse Blyton, a Hunter teenager who tragically lost her life in a dog attack last September, gathered to commemorate what would have been her 18th birthday this week. Her aunt, Josie Blyton Russell, shared heartfelt memories of Annalyse, describing her as having a gentle heart, innocence, and a kind nature that extended to everyone and everything, especially animals.
A Painful Yet Special Celebration
On Sunday, the family held a birthday celebration at Boat Harbour in Port Stephens, where they all wore pink, wrote messages on dissolvable paper, and sent them along with pink roses into the ocean. "We all miss her so much. She was the kindest, most gentle soul. I really don't think she had a bad bone in her body," Mrs. Blyton Russell said. The event was followed by lunch at Anna Bay, where hours were spent sharing stories about their beloved Annalyse. She described the day as "special, but painful and surreal."
Community Support and Awareness Efforts
Through social media, the family encouraged the community to wear pink in honor of Annalyse's birthday, aiming to raise awareness about dog attack prevention and safety. The dog involved in the incident, a boxer-bull Arab-Irish wolfhound cross, was destroyed by police. Mrs. Blyton Russell expressed the profound grief of witnessing Annalyse's final moments, contrasting it with the joy of her early life. "One moment we had this perfect, bright, beautiful and most importantly healthy young Leasy. The next we're all trying to live this unimaginable life without her," she said.
Annalyse's Life and Legacy
Annalyse was a Year 11 student at Singleton High School and lived between Broke with her boyfriend Harry Chenoweth's family and Rutherford with her mother Lauren and siblings. She had six sisters and four brothers, and was deeply loved by her parents Ben Blyton and Lauren Dening, as well as her stepmother Naomi and stepdad Will. Mrs. Blyton Russell highlighted the close bond Annalyse shared with her cousins and her role as godmother to her youngest son, Laken, who was only two at the time of her passing.
The impact of her death on the family has been truly unmeasurable, with Mrs. Blyton Russell noting, "I've never felt pain like this." She credited the support from family, friends, and the community for helping them cope. Annalyse's relationship with her boyfriend Harry was particularly special, described as having a connection "beyond their young years" that brought out the best in her.
Personal Touches and Memories
Annalyse was remembered as a creative and talented artist who enjoyed music by Billie Eilish, Gorillaz, and Zach Bryan. The song "Hey Driver" by Zach Bryan, one of her favorites, was played at her funeral, though Mrs. Blyton Russell admitted she hasn't been able to listen to it since. Since childhood, Annalyse had a fondness for the Hello Kitty character, which is now featured in memorial displays alongside her urn, a tribute shared by many family members.
Mrs. Blyton Russell emphasized that the pain of losing Annalyse is enduring, stating, "In 20 or 30 years from now, I know I'll still be so heartbroken by this. All our family feel the same. We won't ever get over losing our precious girl." The family's tribute not only honors Annalyse's memory but also serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of community and safety in preventing future tragedies.
