The Greens have accused the federal government of 'politicising fraud' to justify significant reductions in National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) spending, according to a committee report released on Wednesday.
Coalition report flags unregistered market risks
The Coalition’s report identified the unregistered market of providers as being beyond the regulator’s reach. It also noted that entry-point screenings could assess qualifications but not always suitability, leaving gaps in oversight.
Greens raise concerns over politicisation
The Greens’ report acknowledged fraud as a serious issue but shared concerns that the government was using fraud allegations to push through spending cuts. The minor party’s NDIS spokesperson, Jordon Steele-John, who served on the committee, said: “Disabled people deserve an NDIS that is both protected from fraud and designed around their rights, not one where they are treated with suspicion because governments have failed to crack down on those actually exploiting the system.”
Steele-John emphasised that the focus should be on targeting actual fraudsters rather than imposing blanket restrictions on participants.
