JD Vance memoir distracts from Iran diplomacy

Vance's second book faces poor reviews and restricted feedback

JD Vance, author of the bestselling Hillbilly Elegy, has published a second memoir titled Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith, focusing on his spiritual journey. However, the book has not been well-received by critics, and major review platforms have limited feedback. Amazon restricted reviews to verified purchasers due to "unusual review activity," while Goodreads suspended reviews altogether. Usha Vance, a voracious reader, has not yet rated her husband's book.

Book tour takes precedence over diplomatic responsibilities

Vance appeared on The View to promote his book but was immediately questioned about political issues. "Let's talk about the book – I'm here to sell books," he pleaded. Moderator Whoopi Goldberg replied, "Eventually we will, but this is a good opportunity for us to get some clarity on stuff." Vance later joked to reporters that his talk show appearance gave him "great experience in very hostile negotiations."

Vance admits lack of diplomatic understanding

During an appearance on Fox News, Vance expressed frustration with diplomatic protocols regarding Iran, stating, "I've gotta be honest with you – I don't really understand these things. [But] I'm trying to be respectful. Given my position in the last year-and-a-half, I have to care about diplomatic protocols all of a sudden." This admission comes as the US engages in sensitive negotiations with Iran, and President Donald Trump has warned of a potential "economic catastrophe" from war.

Criticism of Vance's priorities and past comments

Columnist Arwa Mahdawi criticizes Vance for prioritizing his book tour over his vice-presidential duties. She notes that Vance's infamous "childless cat ladies" comment is addressed in the book, calling it "one of the dumbest things [he] ever said." However, he remains fixated on falling birthrates, mentioning babies 33 times. Mahdawi suggests Vance should leave politics and focus on writing, possibly switching to fantasy given his comfort with fabrication.
