South Australian Man Remains in Custody Following Discovery of Explosive Materials and Cannabis Plants in Adelaide Home

A 55-year-old South Australian man is currently in custody after police allegedly uncovered explosive materials and cannabis plants inside his residence in Adelaide during a search conducted on Thursday night. Officers were dispatched to the Elizabeth Park property located on Waytown Street in Adelaide's northern suburbs, where they reportedly found a variety of chemicals alongside a cannabis-growing operation.

Following a thorough assessment, authorities identified what they described as "volatile explosive materials", which necessitated the immediate involvement of the South Australian Bomb Response Unit. "This wasn't just a small quantity of chemicals — these were volatile materials that required specialist handling," police stated, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.

The man was subsequently arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including possessing supplies for the manufacture of explosives, possessing explosive instructions, cultivating cannabis, and possessing cannabis. Detective Chief Inspector David Huddy confirmed that the area has been secured and is now safe, noting that the bomb squad has successfully removed the hazardous materials.

"They've identified the material, they've made it safe, they've removed it, and now comes the analysis of how much of a threat this material was to the person inside the house or beyond," Huddy explained on Friday. Police maintained a presence at the home overnight, with bomb technicians completing the removal of the explosive materials by Friday.

In response to the incident, Waytown Street has been closed to traffic as emergency services continue their operations at the scene. Authorities have assured the public that there is no immediate threat to neighboring properties but have strongly urged residents and the general public to avoid the area until the operation is fully concluded. The police are conducting further investigations to assess the extent of the threat posed by the materials found.
