Musician Stabbed Outside Newcastle Club, Man Charged with Attempted Murder
A man has been charged with attempted murder following the alleged stabbing of a musician outside a sports club in Newcastle, New South Wales. The incident occurred on Sunday night, leaving the victim in serious but stable condition.
Details of the Attack
Greg Bryce, 69, a singer and guitarist with the Newcastle band DV8, was allegedly stabbed several times in his chest and back near the entrance of Club Merewether, formerly known as Merewether Bowling Club. The attack happened at approximately 7:40 PM, shortly after Bryce had finished his performance and was loading his equipment into his car.
According to friend Michelle Croker, a doctor who was present at the club provided immediate medical assistance to Bryce until paramedics arrived. Croker praised the venue's response, stating, "The venue acted quickly and did everything they could. They secured all his gear in the venue and helped police, which led to a quick arrest last night."
Arrest and Charges
The alleged attacker, Yury Skrynnik, 53, fled the scene before police arrived but was arrested early on Monday morning at a home in Stockton, located in the northern part of Newcastle. Skrynnik has been charged with domestic-violence-related attempted murder and contravening an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO).
He did not apply for release, and bail was formally refused. Skrynnik has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court in May.
Victim's Condition and Club Response
Bryce was transported to a hospital in serious but stable condition. Croker provided an update, saying, "Bryce was still in hospital and hopefully will heal and recover with support, care and time."
Club Merewether, which regularly hosts live music on Sunday evenings, confirmed the stabbing incident and expressed cooperation with police investigations. Club manager Peter Weeding stated, "The immediate priority has been the wellbeing of the victim, their family, and the safety and support of all staff and patrons. We are relieved to report that they are receiving medical care, and we extend our heartfelt well wishes for a full and speedy recovery."
The club's swift actions in securing the victim's gear and assisting authorities were highlighted as crucial in facilitating the rapid arrest of the suspect.
