Four Teenagers Arrested After Armed Confrontations in Canberra Shopping Centres
Police in Canberra have arrested four teenagers in connection with armed confrontations that occurred at two prominent shopping centres last month, sparking widespread fear among shoppers and leading to a swift law enforcement response.
Incidents at Belconnen Westfield and Canberra Centre
The first incident took place on March 19 at the Belconnen Westfield shopping centre, where approximately 18 young people were involved in an altercation. According to ACT Policing, knives and a hammer were brandished during the confrontation, creating a chaotic scene that forced members of the public to seek refuge inside nearby shops.
A similar event unfolded on March 27 at the Canberra Centre, where five young people engaged in another altercation, also involving knives and a hammer. Police investigations revealed that both incidents were likely committed by the same groups of youths, prompting a coordinated inquiry by the Proactive Policing team.
Arrests and Charges
On Wednesday afternoon, two teenagers allegedly linked to the Canberra Centre incident were arrested in the city and remanded in custody. They are scheduled to face court at a later date. The following day, police executed 12 search warrants in Belconnen and Gungahlin, resulting in the arrest of two additional boys for their alleged involvement in the Belconnen Westfield incident.
All four teenagers have been charged with multiple offences, including acts to cause public alarm, possessing an offensive weapon with intent, affray, and property damage. Police confirmed that at the time of their arrests, the teens were subject to bail conditions, good behaviour orders, or correction orders. Additionally, a fifth teenager, already in custody for unrelated matters, will be charged in connection with the Belconnen incident.
Police Response and Community Impact
Detective acting Inspector Heidi Wright, officer in charge of Proactive Policing, emphasized the seriousness of the incidents, stating that the group's actions caused significant public alarm and were deeply confronting for witnesses. "Brandishing knives and other weapons in public is a very serious offence, and it's fortunate no one was injured during these events," she said. "The safety of the community is our highest priority, and we will act quickly to arrest those who cause such alarm."
The confrontations have raised concerns about youth crime and public safety in Canberra, with investigations ongoing and further arrests anticipated. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward as they continue to address these alarming incidents.
