City of Canning Introduces Bin Tagging Initiative to Enhance Waste Management
The City of Canning council is set to launch a comprehensive bin tagging program aimed at educating residents on proper waste disposal and boosting recycling efforts. This initiative will commence on February 9 and run for eight weeks, focusing on improving waste sorting habits across the community.
Program Details and Targeted Areas
The bin tagging program will cover approximately 2400 households in various suburbs, including Queens Park, St James, Wilson, Ferndale, Parkwood, Lynwood, Willetton, Canning Vale, Riverton, and Shelley. Waste education officers will conduct fortnightly inspections of kerbside bins, providing direct feedback to residents.
During these inspections, bins will be marked with either a happy or sad face tag based on their contents. A happy tag indicates that the recycling bin has very low or no contamination, while a sad tag highlights areas for improvement in waste sorting.
Innovative Approaches and Educational Goals
In one specific area, the council will experiment with stickers instead of tags to assess their effectiveness in influencing waste habits. These stickers will be applied at the program's outset to clearly illustrate what items belong in each bin, serving as a visual guide for residents.
Mayor Patrick Hall emphasised that the program's primary objectives are to educate, engage, and enforce positive waste sorting practices. "Helping residents understand how to correctly sort their waste plays a crucial role in improving recycling outcomes," he stated. "When recycling is done right, it boosts resource recovery and delivers benefits for both the city and our community."
Building on Past Success
The upcoming program builds on the success of a previous round, where initial results showed 54 per cent of bins receiving happy tags, increasing to an impressive 81 per cent by the end of the eight weeks. Mayor Hall expressed optimism about replicating and enhancing these outcomes in the new initiative.
To support residents in achieving better recycling results, the council recommends:
- Ensuring all items are loose, as bagged items cannot be recycled.
- Making sure recyclables are empty and rinsed to reduce contamination.
- Removing all lids from bottles and containers before disposal.
Collaborative Efforts and Additional Resources
This project receives support from the State Government and is administered by the Waste Authority, with the WA Local Government Association managing the WasteSorted Bin Tagging Program. The association works closely with local governments to deliver effective project outcomes.
For further assistance, the City of Canning offers waste sorting information in 18 different languages online, ensuring accessibility for all community members. Residents can also request free recycling stickers for their bin lids through the council's waste management email.
