Man Arrested After Failed Knife-Point Carjacking in Canberra

A 24-year-old man has been taken into custody following an attempted knife-point carjacking in Canberra, where he allegedly threatened a driver but was unable to start the vehicle and make his escape.

Court Appearance from Hospital

Nathaniel Coulter, from Latham, faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday, January 27, the day after police were called to Melba over reports of a man brandishing a large knife. Coulter did not appear in person, instead dialling in from a hospital where he was being held in custody.

It remains unclear why he was hospitalised, but Aboriginal Legal Service solicitor Damian Lloveda indicated he did not believe it was related to a mental health issue.

Details of the Alleged Incident

According to ACT Policing, officers were called to Kingsford Smith Drive in Melba around 2.15pm on Monday. Multiple witnesses reported that Coulter attempted to steal a car by threatening the driver with a knife. He allegedly dropped the weapon and was arrested after a brief foot pursuit.

The key factor in the failed carjacking was Coulter's apparent inability to start the vehicle, preventing him from driving away from the scene.

Legal Proceedings and Charges

Coulter did not apply for bail and did not enter pleas to charges including intentional threat to inflict grievous bodily harm and attempted aggravated robbery. During the court hearing, he responded with single-word answers via phone.

Special Magistrate Sean Richter asked Coulter if he was with police officers, if he was not applying for bail, and if he understood his next court date, to which the 24-year-old replied "Yeah" to each question.

Background and Ongoing Investigation

Coulter was subject to bail conditions and a good behaviour order at the time of the alleged incident. He is scheduled to return to court in February.

Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident and has not yet come forward to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website, quoting reference number 8285807. Information can be provided anonymously.
