84-Year-Old Ljubica Brkic Faces Court Over Caleb Wesley's Death
Elderly Driver Charged Over Schoolboy's Tragic Death

An 84-year-old woman has faced Geelong Magistrates' Court over the tragic death of 12-year-old schoolboy Caleb Wesley, who was struck by a vehicle while walking home from school earlier this year.

Court Appearance and Charges

Ljubica Brkic appeared briefly in court on Thursday, charged with dangerous driving causing death following the incident that occurred on May 15, 2024. The elderly Highton resident spoke only to confirm her name and that she could hear proceedings clearly during the short hearing.

The court heard that Brkic was behind the wheel of a white Kia Rio that struck Caleb Wesley as he walked along Scenic Road in Belmont around 3:30 pm. The young boy, who attended Christian College's Middle School in Waurn Ponds, was returning home from school when the tragedy unfolded.

The Tragic Incident

Emergency services rushed to the scene following multiple calls from distressed witnesses. Paramedics worked desperately to save the year 7 student, but despite their efforts, Caleb Wesley succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The collision prompted an immediate investigation by Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives, who spent several hours examining the scene and speaking with witnesses. Police confirmed that the driver stopped immediately after the incident and cooperated with investigators.

Detectives spent over two months gathering evidence before formally charging Brkic with one count of dangerous driving causing death. The charge carries significant potential penalties under Victorian law.

Community Mourning and Legal Proceedings

Caleb's death sent shockwaves through the Geelong community, particularly at Christian College where he was remembered as a bright and beloved student. The school community gathered for a special memorial service following the tragedy, with classmates and teachers sharing heartfelt tributes to the young boy.

During Thursday's court appearance, Brkic's lawyer indicated they would need time to review the brief of evidence before proceeding. Magistrate Franz Holzer adjourned the case until October 3, 2024, when Brkic is expected to return to court.

The elderly woman remains on bail under standard conditions, which include not driving any motor vehicle and not contacting any witnesses involved in the case. The court proceedings continue as both the Wesley family and the accused await the next steps in the legal process.

This case has sparked broader conversations about road safety in school zones and elderly driver testing requirements within the Geelong community, though these discussions remain separate from the specific legal matters before the court.
