Geelong Man Admits to Injury, Police Chase, Burglaries

Benjamin Thomas Quinn, a 28-year-old Geelong man, has pleaded guilty to a series of charges stemming from a crime spree that included causing injury, leading police on a dangerous chase, and committing multiple burglaries. The incidents occurred in various locations across the Geelong region over a period of several weeks.

The Charges

Quinn faced the Geelong Magistrates’ Court on Monday, where he admitted to 12 charges, including one count of causing injury recklessly, two counts of burglary, one count of theft, and one count of failing to stop for police. The court heard that the offending began in early February when Quinn broke into a home in Newtown, stealing electronics and jewelry.

Police Chase

On February 15, police attempted to stop Quinn’s vehicle in East Geelong, but he fled, leading officers on a high-speed chase through residential streets. The pursuit ended when Quinn crashed into a parked car, injuring the driver, a 45-year-old woman who suffered whiplash and bruising. Quinn then fled on foot but was arrested a short time later.

Additional Burglaries

Further investigations linked Quinn to two other burglaries in Belmont and Grovedale, where he stole cash, laptops, and other valuables. Police also recovered stolen property from his home during a search warrant.

Legal Proceedings

Defense lawyer Sarah Johnson told the court that Quinn had a long history of drug addiction and mental health issues, which contributed to his offending. She said he was now seeking treatment and was remorseful for his actions. Magistrate Peter Mithen adjourned the case for sentencing submissions, with Quinn to remain in custody until his next court appearance in April.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Mark Davis emphasized the seriousness of the offending, particularly the police chase which put the public at risk. He called for a significant custodial sentence.

Quinn’s sentencing is scheduled for April 12 at the Geelong Magistrates’ Court. He has been remanded in custody until then.
