Queensland Man Extradited as Sixth Person Charged in Major Eucla Cocaine Seizure

A 33-year-old man from Queensland has become the sixth individual to face charges in connection with a massive 145kg cocaine bust at the Western Australia and South Australian border in 2023. The accused, from the Brisbane suburb of Algester, was recently arrested in Queensland and extradited to Perth, where he is scheduled to appear in Perth Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Details of the Cocaine Seizure and Investigation

The investigation began on June 9, 2023, when police intercepted a Ford Ranger in Eucla, located at the border between Western Australia and South Australia. During the stop, authorities allegedly discovered 68kg of cocaine concealed inside a trailer being towed by the vehicle. Later that same day, a subsequent search of a property in Esperance led to the alleged uncovering of an additional 77kg of cocaine, bringing the total seizure to 145kg.

This operation is part of an ongoing probe by the WA Police transnational serious organized crime squad, which has now resulted in charges against six individuals. The exact value of the seized drugs is estimated to be in the multi-millions of dollars, highlighting the significant scale of the alleged trafficking operation.

Police Statements and Commitment to Disrupting Drug Trade

Detective Senior Sergeant Andy Baker, the officer in charge of the transnational serious organized crime squad, emphasized the unwavering determination of WA Police to target those involved in the drug trade. "No matter how much time has passed or where an offender is located, WA Police will not rest in our efforts to bring them before the courts," he stated.

Baker further explained that police collaborate closely with counterparts across Australia to identify, track, and apprehend individuals engaged in serious organized crime. "Coordinated operations such as this underline both our capability and our determination to disrupt those who profit from the drug trade," he added.

In previous comments, Detective Superintendent John Hutchison revealed that police allege the cocaine was imported into Western Australia via sea. "The (alleged) offenders travelled from Queensland to retrieve it, they planned to deliver a portion of the drugs to Perth and then to the Eastern States on their way back to Queensland," he told The West Australian.

Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Impact

The 33-year-old Queensland man faced a Brisbane magistrate on Tuesday, where WA Police were granted approval for his extradition to Perth. He is due to face a charge of supplying a prohibited drug, specifically cocaine, in the Perth Magistrates Court. This development marks a significant step in the legal process surrounding one of Western Australia's largest drug seizures in recent years.

With five people already charged prior to this extradition, the case underscores the extensive efforts by law enforcement to combat organized crime networks operating across state borders. The ongoing investigation continues to highlight the challenges and successes in policing drug trafficking activities in Australia.
