The Townsville Magistrates Court convened on Tuesday, April 28, hearing a wide range of matters from traffic offences to more serious criminal charges. The following is a comprehensive list of defendants and their cases as they appeared before Magistrate Simon Young.
Traffic and Driving Offences
Several individuals faced charges related to driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. John Smith, 34, of Rasmussen, pleaded guilty to driving with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.12 per cent. He was fined $1,200 and disqualified from driving for six months. Sarah Jones, 28, of Kirwan, was charged with drug driving after returning a positive result for methylamphetamine. She was sentenced to a $1,500 fine and a nine-month driving ban.
In another case, Michael Brown, 45, of Aitkenvale, faced charges of dangerous driving following an incident on the Bruce Highway. The court heard that Brown was speeding and lost control of his vehicle, causing a single-vehicle crash. He was placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond and ordered to pay $2,000 in restitution.
Property and Theft Crimes
A number of defendants appeared on theft and property-related charges. Emma White, 22, of West End, admitted to stealing cosmetics worth $350 from a local pharmacy. She was given a six-month probation order and required to complete 40 hours of community service. Meanwhile, David Wilson, 39, of Mundingburra, faced charges of burglary after breaking into a home in Belgian Gardens. He was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment, suspended after six months.
In a separate matter, a 17-year-old male, who cannot be named due to legal reasons, was charged with unlawful entry of a motor vehicle. The teenager was referred to a youth justice conference and placed under the supervision of the Department of Child Safety.
Drug Offences
Drug-related charges were prominent on the court list. Lisa Taylor, 31, of Idalia, pleaded guilty to possession of a dangerous drug (cannabis) and utensils used in connection with drug use. She received a $500 fine and a conviction was recorded. In a more serious case, Mark Anderson, 52, of Gulliver, was charged with supplying methylamphetamine. The matter was adjourned for mention on May 12 for legal representation to be confirmed.
Another defendant, James Harris, 27, of Douglas, faced charges of producing cannabis plants. Police allegedly found 15 plants at his residence. He was granted bail with strict conditions, including reporting to police twice weekly and residing at a specified address.
Domestic Violence and Assault
Several matters involving domestic violence orders (DVOs) were heard. In one instance, a 42-year-old man from Vincent was charged with breaching a DVO by contacting the aggrieved via text message. He was remanded in custody to reappear on May 5. A 36-year-old woman from South Townsville faced similar charges and was granted bail on condition she not approach the aggrieved person's home or workplace.
An assault case involving a 29-year-old man from Hyde Park was also heard. The defendant pleaded not guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm and the matter was set for trial on June 15.
Other Matters
The court dealt with a variety of other offences, including public nuisance, wilful damage, and fraud. A 23-year-old man from Railway Estate was fined $300 for urinating in a public place. A 31-year-old woman from Condon was charged with fraudulently obtaining a benefit from Centrelink amounting to $4,500. She was ordered to repay the amount and placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond.
Additionally, a 47-year-old man from Mount Louisa faced charges of wilful damage after smashing a window at a local business. He was sentenced to a $1,000 fine and ordered to pay $500 compensation.
Magistrate Young reminded all defendants of their obligations to comply with court orders and adjourned the remaining matters to later dates.
