Long-Serving Public Servant Takes Top Audit Role
The Australian Capital Territory has appointed a highly experienced internal candidate to the crucial position of Auditor-General. Ajay Sharma, a decorated public servant with more than two decades of service within the ACT Audit Office, will take up the territory's top auditing role for a seven-year term.
Acting Speaker Andrew Braddock confirmed the appointment on Thursday, November 27, 2025, following what he described as a robust recruitment process. Mr Sharma, who currently serves as assistant auditor-general, will officially begin his new position in February, replacing the outgoing Michael Harris.
Recognition for Excellence in Public Service
Mr Sharma's appointment comes with significant recognition for his previous contributions to public administration. In 2023, he was awarded the prestigious Public Service Medal for his outstanding service to finance and for strengthening accountability and transparency throughout the ACT Public Service.
The official citation for his medal highlighted his exceptional work in improving accountability and transparency measures. It noted that he provides leadership and guidance to both the ACT Auditor-General and the broader public service to resolve complex, sensitive, and contentious accounting and auditing issues.
Ambitious Audit Program Ahead
The transition in leadership comes at a busy time for the audit office, which is housed at the Nara Centre. According to its 2025-26 performance audit program, the office has 18 audits planned for delivery over the next two years.
The upcoming audits will cover several critical areas of public administration including:
- Bushfire operational plans
- Hazardous waste management
- Outpatient services in the public health system
- The digital health record system
- Territory election processes
Beyond these specific performance audits, the office maintains its core responsibility for conducting independent financial and performance audits on all ACT government agencies and entities funded by the territory.
Acting Speaker Braddock expressed confidence in Mr Sharma's ability to lead the office through this substantial workload, noting his extensive experience auditing the ACT public sector and his proven commitment to accountability and transparency.
