Joan Jett brings rip-roaring rock to Glasgow after 16-year UK hiatus
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts performed at Glasgow's O2 Academy in their first UK headline show in 16 years. The concert celebrated 45 years of her career-defining albums Bad Reputation and I Love Rock'n'Roll. Jett, 67, delivered straight-shooting hard rock with a commanding voice, though some performances felt nonchalant.
A setlist spanning decades
The show featured early cuts from the Runaways, including Cherry Bomb, and recent releases with the Blackhearts. Jett's current three-piece band played hard and fast. Highlights included covers of the Replacements' Androgynous and Sly and the Family Stone's Everyday People, as well as her signature songs I Love Rock'n'Roll and Crimson and Clover.
Controversial Gary Glitter cover mars the night
Despite a strong set, Jett performed convicted paedophile Gary Glitter's Do You Wanna Touch Me. She has defended keeping the song in her repertoire, saying, "Am I going to drop it … after I've had my own career with the song? No." The choice drew criticism as a misstep.
Closing with an anthem
The concert ended with Bad Reputation, a reminder of Jett's independent spirit. She showed little concern for opinions, marching to her own drum as always.
