Czech teenager Linda Noskova unleashed a barrage of powerful groundstrokes to defeat Madison Keys 7-5, 6-3 on Monday, advancing to the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time in her career. The 19-year-old, ranked 38th in the world, broke the American's serve three times and saved all four break points she faced, displaying remarkable composure under pressure.
Dominant Performance from the Start
Noskova, who won the Australian Open junior title in 2021, came out firing from the baseline, dictating rallies with her forehand. She took the first set after breaking Keys at 5-5 and then held serve to love to close it out. In the second set, she broke early for a 2-0 lead and never looked back, sealing the match with a crosscourt winner.
"I'm so happy with how I played today," Noskova said in her on-court interview. "Madison is a great player, but I just focused on my game and it worked."
Keys' Struggles Continue
Madison Keys, the 25th seed, struggled with her consistency, committing 28 unforced errors to Noskova's 12. The American, a former US Open finalist, was unable to find her rhythm on serve, winning only 52% of her first-serve points. "She played really well, and I didn't have my best day," Keys admitted. "I'll learn from this and move on."
Next Up for Noskova
Noskova will face either second seed Aryna Sabalenka or unseeded Jule Niemeier in the quarterfinals. If she meets Sabalenka, it will be a rematch of their second-round encounter at the Australian Open in January, which Sabalenka won in three sets. Noskova, however, believes she has improved since then. "I'm a different player now," she said. "I'll be ready."
The win marks the first time a Czech teenager has reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals since Nicole Vaidisova in 2007. Noskova's powerful game and calm demeanor have drawn comparisons to former world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova, but she is determined to forge her own path.
