World number one Iga Swiatek overcame a determined challenge from American qualifier Taylor Townsend to reach the second round of Wimbledon 2026, winning 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 on Centre Court.
Swiatek's Slow Start
The Polish star, a four-time Grand Slam champion, struggled to find her rhythm early on as Townsend, ranked 94th, used her serve-and-volley game to keep the top seed off balance. Swiatek dropped her serve in the opening game but quickly broke back to level at 1-1. She then broke again in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead and served out the set 6-3 after 38 minutes.
Townsend, known for her net play, increased her aggression in the second set, coming forward at every opportunity. She broke Swiatek in the third game and held her nerve to level the match, winning the set 6-4 with a forehand winner down the line.
Deciding Set Dominance
Swiatek raised her level in the final set, breaking Townsend twice to race to a 5-0 lead. The American saved three match points before Swiatek finally closed out the match on her fourth match point, converting with a crosscourt backhand winner. The match lasted 2 hours and 11 minutes.
"I knew it was going to be tough," Swiatek said in her on-court interview. "Taylor is a great player on grass, and she made me work for every point. I'm just happy to get through."
Statistical Highlights
Swiatek finished with 28 winners to 22 unforced errors, while Townsend had 35 winners but 41 unforced errors. The Polish player won 68% of points on her first serve and saved 5 of 7 break points. Townsend won 14 of 23 net approaches.
Swiatek will face either Sara Sorribes Tormo or a qualifier in the second round as she seeks her first Wimbledon title. The 25-year-old has reached the quarterfinals at the All England Club twice before, in 2023 and 2024.
