England dominated the opening day of the second Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge, reaching 4-315 at stumps. Joe Root and Harry Brook both scored centuries to put the hosts in a commanding position.
Root and Brook Shine
Joe Root continued his excellent form, scoring 143 not out, while Harry Brook made 124. The pair added 224 runs for the fourth wicket after England had been reduced to 3-91. Root's innings was his 32nd Test century, moving him up the all-time list.
New Zealand Struggle
New Zealand's bowlers toiled on a flat pitch, with Tim Southee taking 2-68 and Matt Henry 1-55. The visitors had a chance to dismiss Root early but dropped a catch at slip when he was on 34.
England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to bat, a decision that paid off handsomely. Openers Zak Crawley (18) and Ben Duckett (32) got off to a solid start before both fell to Southee. Ollie Pope made 21 before edging to the wicketkeeper.
New Zealand will need early wickets on day two to stay in the match. The pitch is expected to remain good for batting, but there could be some assistance for spinners later in the game.
