Socceroos forward Awer Mabil has opened up about the viral video showcasing the team's diversity, describing it as 'raw' and 'unedited.' The video, released before the World Cup, features players sharing their backgrounds and has resonated deeply with Australians.
Mabil's Personal Connection
Mabil, one of four current Socceroos who arrived in Australia as refugees, was born in a Kenyan camp to South Sudanese parents. During a press conference in Oakland, he reflected on his childhood memories of watching SBS, the free-to-air network that broadcast football highlights. 'I grew up watching SBS as a kid, because it was free TV,' he said, thanking commentator David Basheer for the memories.
Big Brother to Young Players
Mabil has taken on a mentorship role for younger teammates, including fellow refugees Mo Touré and Nestory Irankunda. 'It’s something special for me to see their growth... I can only be there, allow them to be themselves, and protect them when they need protection,' he said. Irankunda's goal against Turkey recently sparked widespread positivity toward multiculturalism in Australia.
The Viral Video
The two-minute video, which begins with Mabil's words, has been widely shared on social media. 'It was a moment to describe what Australia is – a very multicultural country, and that’s what makes it the best country in the world,' Mabil said. 'The reason why it went viral is because it was raw. It was not edited. It was just purely what the players wanted to say.' He believes Australians can 'feel and relate' to the team's diversity.
Refugee Week Message
Coinciding with global Refugee Week, Mabil expressed gratitude to Australia for welcoming refugees. 'It’s a week that I would like to say to anybody that is misplaced all over the world that we are with you... everything is possible, so keep going,' he said.
