New $2 Coins for 2026 Commonwealth Games Released

The Royal Australian Mint has announced the release of three new limited-edition $2 coins commemorating the 2026 Commonwealth Games. These coins will be distributed exclusively through Woolworths supermarkets, appearing in shoppers' change starting from July 15.

Gymnastics Leads the First Batch

The first batch, released on July 15, features a gymnastics design. The coin depicts a golden gymnast arched back in a salute over a green and gold star, which serves as the central motif for all three coins. This release kicks off a series of three weekly batches, each highlighting a different sport.

Wheelchair Basketball and Athletics Follow

The second batch, available from July 22, celebrates wheelchair basketball. The illustration shows a player with one hand on the wheel of his chair and the other gripping a basketball. The third batch, released from July 29, honors athletics with a runner depicted on the coin. All three designs were created in collaboration between the Mint and Woolworths.

Exclusive Distribution Through Woolworths

The $2 coins are available solely through Woolworths cash registers. While not every Woolworths supermarket will carry them, the company stated they will be available “at most Woolworths registers while stock lasts.” 7NEWS.com.au has contacted Woolworths to confirm availability across all states and territories.

Australian swimmer and Olympic champion Mollie O’Callaghan, who will headline Australia’s Commonwealth Games swimming squad alongside Lani Pallister, visited a Woolworths to preview the coins. Royal Australian Mint CEO Emily Martin urged shoppers and collectors to check their change, saying, “You too might take home gold.”

Third Collaboration with Woolworths

Commonwealth Games Australia CEO Craig Phillips AM noted that this is the third Commonwealth Games coin program Woolworths has collaborated on with the Mint. He said the coins provide Australians with “a tangible way to connect with our team.” The 2026 Commonwealth Games will be held in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2, featuring a 10-sport program. The Games will be broadcast live and free on Seven and 7plus.
