British tennis fans had plenty to celebrate at the Queen's Club Championships as Katie Boulter produced a stunning upset over world No.4 Elena Rybakina, while Emma Raducanu also secured a victory to kick off the tournament in style.
Boulter's Career-Defining Victory
Katie Boulter, the British No.1, recorded the biggest win of her career by defeating Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in a thrilling first-round encounter. The 27-year-old from Leicester showed tremendous resilience and composure to overcome the Wimbledon champion, who was considered one of the favorites for the title.
Boulter's aggressive baseline play and powerful serves kept Rybakina under pressure throughout the match. After losing the second set, Boulter regrouped and broke Rybakina early in the deciding set, holding her nerve to serve out the victory. The win marks Boulter's first top-5 victory and will boost her confidence ahead of Wimbledon.
Raducanu Makes Winning Start
Earlier in the day, Emma Raducanu delighted the home crowd with a straight-sets win over China's Wang Xiyu, 6-3, 6-2. The 2021 US Open champion looked sharp and focused, dictating play with her powerful groundstrokes and solid movement.
Raducanu, who has struggled with injuries and form since her Grand Slam triumph, showed glimpses of her best tennis. She broke Wang's serve four times and saved all three break points she faced, wrapping up the match in just 73 minutes. The victory sets up a potential second-round clash with top seed and world No.1 Iga Swiatek.
Queen's Club Delivers Drama
The Queen's Club Championships, a traditional warm-up event for Wimbledon, has already provided plenty of excitement. With Boulter and Raducanu advancing, British hopes are high for a deep run. Other notable results included defending champion Carlos Alcaraz easing past qualifier Arthur Fils, and Andy Murray battling past Lorenzo Musetti in three sets.
The tournament continues to showcase top-level grass-court tennis, and the performances of Boulter and Raducanu have added to the anticipation for the upcoming Grand Slam at Wimbledon.
