West Coast Eagles Coach Andrew McQualter Celebrates Young Team's Poise in Drought-Breaking Victory

West Coast Eagles coach Andrew McQualter has heaped praise on both the young and experienced players for their composure during critical moments in a hard-fought, drought-breaking victory over North Melbourne at Optus Stadium on Sunday. The Eagles rallied from a 30-point deficit early in the second term to clinch a 17.9 (111) to 15.14 (104) win, marking their first triumph since May of last year.

Eagles Overcome Adversity to Secure Long-Awaited Win

The victory did not come easily, as North Melbourne mounted a fierce comeback in the final quarter, scoring the first three goals to narrow the gap to just 11 points. However, the Eagles found another gear, holding on in front of more than 47,000 enthusiastic fans to secure the win. McQualter highlighted the significance of this moment, especially for the nine players who entered the game without a prior AFL victory.

"We saw them grow in front of our eyes today, and that's great for them," McQualter said. "The crowd made a huge difference—I could hear that through the glass I was behind, and I think it's really powerful for our group if the crowd is loud like that."

He emphasized the importance of key moments in the match, stating, "The game is about moments when it becomes a tussle like that in the last quarter, and I thought multiple guys—and I said that to them—just owned their moments and executed what they had to do. Their fundamentals were strong, and we got the job done."

Harley Reid Shines with Career-High Performance

The new generation of Eagles was led by a fit and firing Harley Reid, who delivered a career-high 30 disposals, benefiting from a stellar pre-season. North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson had flagged that the 20-year-old would receive plenty of attention, and the Kangaroos delivered, with Reid involved in multiple scuffles throughout the game.

McQualter praised Reid for his mature approach to the physicality, including an incident with Kangaroos defender Charlie Comben at three-quarter time. "I was actually on my way downstairs... so I didn't actually see the incident, but I obviously got told about it," he said. "It is a sign of Harley's maturity; he's working hard on his discipline. He's not going to be perfect, and that's OK. He's going to be playing on the edge, which is what we want him to do because I'm a believer that the best players have to play on the edge, and it's a good part of his game. He's going to work really hard on his discipline."

Injury Concern for Key Defender Harry Edwards

The biggest downside of the Eagles' rare victory was a second concussion in three weeks for key defender Harry Edwards, who was ruled out before quarter-time after friendly fire from teammate Matt Flynn. McQualter expressed concern for Edwards' health, saying, "I'm imagining he'll spend a little bit of time away from the game now trying to get himself healthy and right again. And we'll do everything we can to support him. He'd had a couple (before this year); I couldn't speak exactly to the detail of it, but there'd been a couple, I believe."

This victory not only breaks a long winless streak but also showcases the potential of West Coast's young squad, with McQualter optimistic about their growth and resilience moving forward in the AFL season.
