Essendon recruit Jaxon Artemis has declared he backs himself to take flight at the Bombers after making the bold decision to turn down a lucrative contract offer from Tasmania.
Artemis chooses Bombers over Tasmania
The highly-rated prospect was heavily pursued by Tasmania, who tabled a significant financial package to lure him to their AFL side. However, Artemis ultimately opted to join Essendon, a move that raised eyebrows given the substantial offer from the expansion club.
Speaking publicly for the first time about his decision, Artemis said he was confident in his ability to succeed at the highest level and that Essendon presented the best environment for his development.
“I back myself to fly here at Essendon,” Artemis told reporters on Wednesday. “It was a tough decision, but I feel this is the right place for me to grow as a player and a person.”
Financial sacrifice for football growth
The 20-year-old acknowledged the financial sacrifice involved in rejecting Tasmania’s offer, but stressed that his long-term football ambitions took precedence.
“Money is important, but it’s not everything. I want to play in big games, learn from the best coaches, and be part of a club with a rich history like Essendon,” he said.
Artemis, who is known for his speed and marking ability, has been tipped to make an immediate impact in the Bombers’ forward line. Essendon list manager Adrian Dodoro praised the recruit’s commitment and said the club was thrilled to have secured his signature.
“Jaxon is a player with enormous potential. We’re excited to see him develop in the red and black,” Dodoro said.
