WAFL 2026: Kane Bevan Among Six Debutants for WA vs SA
Kane Bevan Among Six WAFL Debutants for WA vs SA

West Perth midfielder Kane Bevan is one of six players set to make their state debut for Western Australia in the upcoming WAFL clash against South Australia. The match, scheduled for next month, will see a blend of youth and experience as the Black Swans look to continue their strong form in interstate competition.

Debutants Named

Alongside Bevan, the other first-time representatives include East Perth’s Jack Cooley, Claremont’s Tom Lee, Subiaco’s Liam Hickmott, Swan Districts’ Jesse Turner, and Peel Thunder’s Ben Edwards. All six have impressed during the early rounds of the WAFL season, earning selection in the 24-man squad.

Experienced Core

While the debutants bring fresh energy, the squad is anchored by seasoned campaigners such as captain Brayden Ainsworth and vice-captain Mitchell Crowden. Ainsworth, a key figure in West Perth’s midfield, will lead the team for the fourth consecutive state game. Crowden, who has represented WA on multiple occasions, provides leadership and experience in the forward line.

Coach Mark Walsh expressed confidence in the squad’s balance. “We have a good mix of players who have been here before and some exciting young talent who have earned their opportunity,” Walsh said. “Kane has been outstanding for West Perth this season, and we expect him to step up to the level.”

Selection Criteria

The selection panel prioritized form and consistency, with each debutant averaging over 20 disposals per game in the WAFL this year. Bevan, in particular, has been a standout, averaging 24 disposals and seven tackles, earning him a spot in the state team after being overlooked in previous years.

Opposition

South Australia will field a strong side, including several SANFL stars with AFL experience. The match, to be held at Adelaide Oval, promises to be a tough test for the WA side. However, Walsh believes his team’s preparation and depth will be key. “South Australia always brings a physical contest, but we have the players to match them,” he said.

The game is part of the WAFL’s representative calendar, which aims to showcase the league’s best talent. Western Australia has won the last two encounters against South Australia, and the side will be eager to maintain that record.

Team Preparation

The squad will assemble for a training camp in Perth before traveling to Adelaide. The camp will focus on team cohesion and game plan implementation. Walsh noted that the inclusion of debutants adds excitement but also requires careful integration. “We want them to enjoy the experience but also understand the responsibility of representing their state,” he added.

Bevan, speaking after his selection, said he was thrilled to be part of the team. “It’s a dream come true. I’ve worked hard for this opportunity, and I can’t wait to pull on the black and gold,” he said.

The match is scheduled for Saturday, June 13, at 2:10 PM local time. Tickets are available through the WAFL website.
