Luke Ryan's Resilient Return Earns High Praise After Fremantle Dockers' Win Over Melbourne
Fremantle Dockers' veteran defender Luke Ryan has been widely commended for his resilient performance in Saturday night's victory over Melbourne, following a challenging period marked by omission from the side and a bout of COVID-19. Teammate Jordan Clark led the tributes, highlighting Ryan's unwavering dedication to the club.
Overcoming Adversity to Shine on the Field
Ryan, who missed the Dockers' previous clash with Geelong due to an interrupted pre-season, was initially slated as a travelling emergency for that match. However, plans shifted when he was listed to play a practice game for Peel Thunder, only to be pulled out at the last minute due to illness. Despite being overlooked for selection against the Demons, Ryan received a late call-up when Brandon Walker was ruled out with soreness.
The 30-year-old defender quickly settled into his customary role as Fremantle's deepest defender, starting against former West Coast utility Jai Culley before switching to cover Brody Mihocek. Ryan grew into the game impressively, finishing with 24 disposals and 11 marks while maintaining solid defensive efforts throughout the match.
Teammate and Coach Laud Ryan's Commitment
Jordan Clark, a fellow defender, praised Ryan's ability to bounce back from setbacks. "Up until last week, he had played 107 AFL games straight. He has played under a lot more duress than COVID," Clark told The West Australian. "He does anything for this club and we love playing with him. It's great to have him back. We knew what we were going to get from him."
Coach Justin Longmuir also acknowledged Ryan's contributions, though he stopped short of guaranteeing his place in the team moving forward. "He played his role really well," Longmuir stated, emphasizing that Ryan's efforts to regain full fitness were beginning to yield results. "He was close last week. He was really crook, so he didn't travel to Geelong and then probably because of that he found himself a bit behind a few of the others."
Longmuir added, "Brandon hurt himself, well he had a bit of soreness late in the week ... thought he was a chance to get up, but we had to take him out today. Luke was well-prepared and fitted in seamlessly. He has done a lot of work to try and catch up to the rest of the pack and I think that work paid off for him tonight."
Ryan's performance not only helped secure Fremantle's win but also underscored his value as a key player who can overcome personal and professional hurdles to deliver on the field. His resilience and dedication have set a positive tone for the Dockers as they continue their AFL campaign.
