Nathan Broad Considers West Coast Move Amid Free Agency Speculation

Richmond triple premiership defender Nathan Broad is reportedly showing a growing interest in returning to his home state of Western Australia, according to exclusive sources from The West Australian. The 32-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of this season, is said to be motivated by family reasons after spending 11 years at Punt Road.

Potential Reunion with Former Teammates at West Coast

Rebuilding West Coast Eagles appear to be the most likely destination for Broad, where he could link up with former Richmond interim coach Andrew McQualter. This move might also include an off-field role, adding depth to the Eagles' coaching or development staff. Broad, a free agent after signing a two-year deal with Richmond in 2024, has developed into a strong leader at the Tigers, playing 173 games since being drafted from Swan Districts in 2015.

His accolades include life membership at Richmond for his role in three premierships (2017, 2019, 2020) and winning the Francis Bourke Award for Players’ Player in the past three seasons. Broad also represented Western Australia in the historic AFL Origin clash against Victoria earlier this year.

West Coast's Strategy to Bolster Their Rebuild

The Eagles have been vocal about their desire to surround their talented youngsters with mature-age footballers to aid in their rebuild. This strategy has already seen the acquisition of former Richmond teammates Liam Baker and Jack Graham in 2024, as well as Tylar Young last year. Other recent additions include players like Matt Owies from Carlton, Brandon Starcevich and Deven Robertson from Brisbane, Harry Scheonberg from Adelaide, and Finlay Macrae from Collingwood.

McQualter's connection with Broad, stemming from his time as a long-time assistant at Richmond, could facilitate this potential move. Since joining West Coast in late 2024, McQualter has made significant changes to the coaching staff, bringing in former Hawthorn development coach Marco Bello, former Melbourne midfield coach Sam Radford, and Geelong premiership player Mitch Duncan.

Broader Trade Market Activity for West Coast

West Coast is expected to be an active player in the trade market in the coming years. The West Australian revealed last month that the club is among several interested in out-of-contract Gold Coast forward Jed Walter, who has ties to Perth and was once an Eagles supporter. Additionally, the Eagles have been linked to other West Australians, including Sydney superstar Chad Warner, Port Adelaide forward Mitch Georgiades, and Melbourne premiership defender Trent Rivers, all of whom are out of contract at the end of next year. Warner, in particular, is anticipated to command a salary close to $2 million as a high-profile free agent.

This potential move for Nathan Broad underscores West Coast's ongoing efforts to blend experience with youth as they navigate their rebuild in the competitive AFL landscape.
