Rope Them In Firms for Quokka Calculations After First-Up Roma Cup Success

Rope Them In has significantly firmed to $10 in Quokka markets after commencing his autumn racing preparation in spectacular style, securing a victory in the Group 3 $200,000 PKF Roma Cup over 1100 meters at Ascot. The win has positioned the horse as a serious contender for upcoming major races, including the highly anticipated Quokka event.

Thrilling Race Dynamics and Strategic Performance

A hotly contested dispute emerged for initial supremacy right from the start, with an efficient beginning allowing jockey Shaun McGruddy to skillfully slide Rope Them In, priced at $6.50, behind the leaders. He tracked up in fifth position, closely trailing the chief danger, Smooth Chino, who was the favorite at $2.50.

As the race intensified around the home corner, Smooth Chino quickly raced past the early pacemakers. While Rope Them In took a brief moment to hit his straps, by the 200-meter mark, he had achieved top gear and was thrusting powerfully after the market elect. With just 75 meters to go, he drew level with Smooth Chino and eventually edged away over the late part of the race, scoring by a short neck. The same margin separated the second and third places, with Oscar’s Fortune finishing third at $5.50.

Jockey and Trainer Insights on Future Prospects

In post-race comments, McGruddy expressed confidence in Rope Them In's abilities, highlighting his potential for bigger races. "He’s probably a good Group 3, Group 2 horse, but I’ve always said if he had’ve drawn a good gate in the Winterbottom and just got that perfect suck run, he could’ve really troubled the winner on that day," McGruddy stated.

He emphasized the importance of strategic positioning, adding, "If he can draw a gate in the Quokka or any good race going forward and just get that perfect run where he doesn’t do any work, he’s got an explosive turn of foot late. He’s at his best now. He’s better than he ever has been, but to win those big ones, anyone will tell you, you need to have the run of the race."

Trainer Steve Wolfe noted that Rope Them In was only about 75 to 80 percent fit for this race, which is ideal for a first-up performance. McGruddy also shared his initial concerns during the race, saying, "I was really hoping it wouldn’t go that hard, Smooth Chino, but it did get us off the bridle, and that’s just full credit to the horse. To be under pressure like that from about the 500m and riding him along… I certainly didn’t travel like a winner. But he just kept responding to my urgings, and that’s why he’s such a good horse."

Other Notable Performances at the Event

Earlier in the day, Sean and Jake Casey strengthened their preparations for the Karrakatta Plate when Beatty, priced at $2.15 favorite, and He’s A Machino, at $5.50, quinellaed the Listed $200,000 Perth Stakes over 1100 meters. He’s A Machino took the early lead but was closely challenged by Beatty, resulting in a terrific duel. Beatty eventually asserted dominance over the last 50 meters to win by a long neck.

Both horses remain co-second favorites at $4.60 for the Karrakatta Plate, behind Aurum Belle, who is posted at $2.50. Aurum Belle secured a victory in the Group 3 $200,000 Gimcrack Stakes over 1100 meters, overcoming the Caseys' Maria Lucia. Utilizing barrier 10 to Maria Lucia's 13, Aurum Belle, the favorite at $1.55, sped to the front under jockey Brad Parnham. Upon turning for home, she scuttled clear and held on to win by a half-length, with Maria Lucia persistently closing in.

These results set the stage for an exciting autumn racing season, with Rope Them In emerging as a key player to watch in the Quokka and other prestigious events.
