Richmond coach Adem Yze has made it clear that the club will do everything in its power to retain defender Nathan Broad, amid growing interest from rival AFL clubs. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Yze emphasised Broad's importance to the Tigers' defensive structure and leadership group.
Yze stands firm on Broad's future
“Nathan is a key part of our backline and a respected leader within the group,” Yze said. “We are actively working to ensure he remains a Tiger for years to come.” Broad, who has been a consistent performer for Richmond since his debut, is understood to be attracting attention from several clubs looking to bolster their defensive stocks.
Contract negotiations ongoing
The 32-year-old defender is out of contract at the end of the 2026 season, and negotiations have been ongoing for several weeks. Yze expressed confidence that a deal would be reached, stating that both parties are committed to finding a solution. “Nathan wants to stay, and we want him here. It’s just a matter of sorting out the details,” Yze added.
Broad has played 189 games for Richmond since making his debut in 2016, including three premierships in 2017, 2019, and 2020. His experience and composure under pressure have made him a valuable asset to the Tigers' young developing side.
Rival interest heats up
Reports have linked Broad with moves to several Victorian clubs, as well as interstate teams seeking experienced defenders. However, Yze dismissed suggestions that Broad was considering leaving. “He’s a one-club player at heart,” Yze said. “We’re not worried about losing him.” The Tigers are hopeful of finalising a new contract for Broad before the mid-season bye.
Richmond currently sits 12th on the AFL ladder with a 4-6 record, and Yze believes retaining experienced players like Broad is crucial for the club’s long-term development. “We’re building something here, and Nathan is a big part of that,” Yze concluded.
