Sam Docherty Welcomed Back by Carlton After Leaked Criticism

Sam Docherty Reunites with Carlton Amid Leaked Criticism Fallout

Sam Docherty has been warmly welcomed back into the Carlton Football Club, with captain Patrick Cripps affirming that there are no lingering hard feelings towards the retired star. This follows Docherty's private, expletive-laden criticism of the Blues, which was leaked last month.

In a private voice message, Docherty described Carlton as a "f****** s***show" after their season-opening loss to Sydney. The message was intended for content creator and former teammate Daniel Gorringe, who publicly shared it on social media without Docherty's consent. As a result, Docherty was withdrawn from speaking duties at a club function shortly after the leak.

Charity Event Bridges Divides

Despite the controversy, Docherty participated in the launch of Carlton and Collingwood's annual charity match on Monday, supporting the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation. A two-time testicular cancer survivor, Docherty's involvement highlights the personal significance of the event.

Cripps expressed strong support for Docherty, stating, "He's good. I chat to Doc all the time and he does a great amount of work for Peter Mac, but obviously with his story as well it makes this game extra special for us." He emphasized the broader community impact, noting, "We saw what he went through with his battle and we also saw the power of community when people come together to support a mate when they need it."

Moving Forward from Private Comments

Cripps addressed the leaked criticism directly, explaining that the comments were made in a private setting and not meant for public consumption. "Yeah, I chatted to him, but at the end of the day those comments weren't meant to get aired," Cripps said. "People look at it in two ways but realistically he did that in a private sort of setting. I chat to Doc all the time, I have no hard feelings towards Doc, and we've moved on from that."

Docherty's remarks inadvertently intensified scrutiny on Carlton, which has faced a challenging season with a 1-4 record. Coach Michael Voss is under particular pressure in the final year of his contract, amid ongoing team performance issues.

Upcoming Rivalry Clash and Team Dynamics

Carlton is set to face Collingwood at the MCG on Thursday night, a match Cripps described with heightened anticipation. "There's nothing more that I love than beating the Pies," he said. "You love winning every game but there's certainly a little bit more when you beat your rivals." However, Carlton has struggled in recent encounters, with Collingwood winning the last four meetings and seven of eight since 2022.

In team news, Cripps commented on the recent dropping of reigning best-and-fairest winner George Hewett for last week's loss to Adelaide. He expressed sympathy for Hewett, praising his work ethic and positive attitude, but deferred selection decisions to Coach Voss. "You feel for him because you see the work he puts in and he put the team ahead of everything because of the way he showed up," Cripps noted. "He created a real positive energy, which is what you want to see when guys don't get the opportunity. I've got a lot of respect for him and he'll play a lot of footy for us this year."

The charity round serves as a reminder of issues beyond football, with Cripps adding, "That's why this round's so special. It puts a spotlight on things that are much bigger than the game itself." As Carlton navigates on-field challenges, the reunion with Docherty underscores a focus on unity and community support.
