Lani Pallister Stuns with Gold Medal Double at Australian Open Swimming Championships
Australia's swimming sensation Lani Pallister has firmly established herself as a top contender for the upcoming Glasgow Commonwealth Games, delivering a breathtaking performance at the Australian Open swimming championships. On the opening night of finals, Pallister transitioned from sublime to supreme, securing the 400m freestyle title to complement her earlier 800m freestyle victory.
Pallister's Record-Breaking Swim in the 400m Freestyle
The 23-year-old athlete dominated an international field at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, clocking an astonishing time of 3:59.36. This marked her second fastest performance ever, achieved in a highly competitive heat that included New Zealand's Erika Fairweather, the first swimming world champion in the 400m for her country, who finished second with a time of 4:02.09. Brazil's Maria Costa claimed the bronze medal with a time of 4:03.41.
Pallister's back-to-back gold medals have solidified her status as a rising star in Australian swimming, with her eyes now set on the Commonwealth Games pool in Glasgow.
Kyle Chalmers Excels in Butterfly Events Ahead of LA28 Olympics
In another highlight of the championships, Kyle Chalmers thrilled spectators with a near-record performance in the 50m butterfly. Inspired by the introduction of form strokes for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, Chalmers clocked 22.77 seconds, coming within a mere 0.04 seconds of a national record set nearly 16 years ago.
The 27-year-old, who has been a member of the Australian Dolphins team for 11 years, expressed his excitement about setting personal best times. "It's about swimming PBs and the 50m butterfly is the event that I first medalled in, back in 2014," said Chalmers, after adding the 50m fly title to his 100m freestyle win from Monday night. "I think I have a body that is best suited to butterfly so to turn the clock back to when I first started is amazing. I am really looking forward to it."
Chalmers, who still holds four national age records in butterfly, emphasized the significance of achieving personal bests in a stroke he loved as a junior. "Any PB is a good PB and to do it in a stroke that I really loved swimming as a junior is kind of special. I have actually been working a lot on my butterfly and it may be on the cards for LA28. But there's a lot of work to do first." Ben Armbruster finished second in 23.46 seconds, with Isaac Cooper taking third in 23.57 seconds.

Looking Ahead to Major International Competitions
The Australian Open serves as a crucial tune-up event for Australia's trials for the Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, scheduled to take place in Sydney from June 7 to 13. The Glasgow Commonwealth Games are set to commence on July 23, while the Pan Pacific Championships will be held in the United States in August. These performances highlight the depth of talent in Australian swimming as athletes prepare for a busy international season.
